We have celebrated the 2nd edition of the event ¨Infancy, illness, and death in an educational setting.¨
The event, which took place in the Hub Social Barcelona, has counted with the support of experts who shared tools to explore and facilitate the support given to students with grave illnesses.
Many children that have been diagnosed with childhood cancer or suffer from another grave illness have not been able to return to school or have been forced to vacate their classes. Others will be diagnosed throughout the length of the course. It is a situation that many educational professionals have to face at one point during their career. Being aware of this reality, the Villavecchia Foundation has organized for a consecutive year the event ¨Infancy, illness, and death in educational settings¨, motivated by the success of the event´s first iteration that received a 9.4/10 feedback rating from those who attended the event.
The event was conducted by Asha Miró, writer, presenter, and technician from Servei de Suports i Mesures per a la Inclusio from the Department of Education.
The event inaugurated Tana Tarpiella, general director of Inclusive Eduction from the Geralitat de Catalunya, as well as Dr. Nuria Pardo, pediatric oncologist and president of the Villavecchia Foundation.
Speakers at the event included Pablo Rodriguez Herrero, professor of the Department of Pedagogy of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, presenting ¨Education for a more fulfilling life with death in mind¨, and Xusa Serra, a nurse specialized in the final days of life and grief, with her talk ¨Death and grief in children. Accompanying during moments that will not be forgotten¨. Subsequently, two workshops took place: Iván Gómez Garcia, psychologist specialized in psychooncology and palliative care, led the workshop ¨8 ways to help grieving children and teenagers through a school community¨ and Angels Miret, psychopedagogist specializing in grief and loss, leading the workshop ¨Loss and grief in a school context.
