What is the Foundation?
The Enriqueta Villavecchia Private Foundation for Infantile Oncology (La Fundación Privada de Oncología Infantil Enriqueta Villavecchia) was started in Barcelona in 1989 to collaborate in administering to the needs of both children with cancer and their families living here in Catalunya.
Children with cancer see how their lives and the lives of their loved ones are drastically changed by the following:
- hospital stays
- lack of information, the anguish, the hours of tedium
- possible loss of an entire year of school
- their parents’ necessary absences from work
- hair loss
- long journeys for treatment
- lack of economic resources
These are, among others, the human problems connected with such a serious illness, which is in itself enough of a burden.
By attending to the material and psychological necessities, bettering the physical and familial environments, we try to make it so the child is able to live with the disease and its consequences in the most dignified way possible. This also contributes favorably to the possibility of curing the illness.
We try, in short, to better these children's quality of life and integrate them fully into society.
The Foundation is present in all the hospitals in Catalunya where treatment of infantile cancer is carried out: San Juan de Dios, Materno Infantil del Valle de Hebrón, Germans Trías I Pujol de Badalona, San Pablo, Corporació Sanitaria Parc Taulí de Sabadell, etc.
