Activities

When a child suffers from an oncological illness his or her life changes. He or she becomes unable to take part in a series of activities which come naturally to childhood and which are necessary for harmonious development.

Having detected these shortages, the Foundation, from its beginnings, has promoted Play Rooms, one at Hospital de Sant Pau and later one on the Oncology Floor at the Hospital de la Vall d’Hebró.

In this way, every year children with cancer participate in activities with the aim of making them feel in control of their destinies. They also have experiences that, being ill, may be difficult, sometimes even impossible for them to have otherwise.

During recent years, the Foundation has developed the following program, among others:

  • Availability of a Play Room at the Foundation’s headquarters: The Play Room is open all year long. Volunteers are present to ensure that the games are always ready and to play with the children. The Play Rooms are the perfect place for children to relax and blow off steam.

  • Winter Camp in Andorra: every year a group of children participate in this activity. They go to Andorra to ski and play in the snow. The objective is for the children to forget about hospital life; for them to be distracted from the difficult experiences which come with having cancer. They travel accompanied by volunteers, doctors, nurses and the activities director.

  • Trips to Disney World, Seville (Expo 1992), Bonn, Cologne, Hamburg, Disney Land (Euro Disney- Paris), Timmendorfer Strand, Vienna, Mallorca, etc.

  • Attendance at different cultural , entertainment and sporting events, as well as field trips (concerts, museums, Port-Aventura Amusement Park, football/soccer games, tennis matches, afternoon snacks, etc.)

  • Promoting visits by famous people to see hospitalized children who are their fans (Mecano, Ronaldo, The Barcelona Dragons, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Rivaldo, etc.,)

  • Presents for the children: One way the Foundation fosters hope in hospitalized children is by giving them Christmas presents, books for Sant Jordi, birthday and saint’s day gifts, as well as for other special holidays.

  • Self-esteem and creativity are fostered by filling the hospitalized child's free time by holding literary contests, drawing contests, Christmas card contests, etc. The contests are for all the children in treatment in the different hospitals.
